Manchester Airport is a major airport in Manchester, England. Manchester Airport opened in June 1938, and was initially known as Ringway Airport. It is based on the border between Cheshire and Manchester in the county of Greater Manchester, 16 km southwest from the city.
The airport is owned by the ten local councils of Greater Manchester under the name Manchester Airports Group (MAG).
The airport has 2 parallel runways, 2 terminals and a railway station. It also has a CAA Public Use Aerodrome License that allows flights for the public transport of passengers and for flying instruction.
In 2007, Manchester Airport handled 22,112,624 passengers with 222,602 aircraft flights, making it the 4th busiest airport in the UK in passenger numbers and 3rd in terms of total flights.
